On the afternoon of November 16, 2007, Chinese President Hu Jintao met with Singaporean Minister Mentor Lee Kuan Yew at the Great Hall of the People. Hu spoke highly of the new progress bilateral ties have achieved, as well as Lee's remarkable contributions to the development of the ties. He said Sino-Singaporean relations had further developed since the two countries forged diplomatic ties 17 years ago. The president noted that the two countries had kept close high-level exchanges and built up political trust with fruitful economic and trade cooperation. Both sides have also advanced exchanges in humanities and other areas and maintained coordination in the international and regional affairs, he added. Hu expressed gratitude for the adherence of Singapore to the one-China policy, and its opposition to "Taiwan's Independence" as well as its support to China's reunification cause. He said China was pursuing what the 17th CPC National Congress had agreed to build a well-off society, and Singapore was taking the strategy of rebuilding Singapore, thus the two countries faced the new opportunity for cooperation. China would like to work with Singapore in making full use of favorable conditions to promote the relations to a new height for the benefit of the two peoples and the region as a whole, said the Chinese president. Expressing warm congratulations on the successful convening of the 17th CPC National Congress, Lee Kuan Yew said China's development benefited Asia and the world at large. Singapore would be committed to long-term all-round cooperation of mutual benefits with China, so as to contribute to the common development and prosperity of the region and to play a positive role in promoting cooperation between China and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), he added. Chinese Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi, Director of the President's Office Chen Shiju, Assistant Foreign Minister He Yafei and other officials attended the meeting. |
